William F. Buckley: Racist, elitist, Beatle-hater

Despite his canonization by conservative columnists across the country, William F. Buckley was no saint. In fact, he was nothing more than a highly literate ignoramus who, quite literally, looked down his nose at almost everyone.

For example, Buckley said, "I profoundly believe it takes a lot of practice to become a moral slob" and "[Whites in the South are] the advanced race." And when the Beatles first landed in America, he said, "The Beatles are not merely awful. They are so unbelievably horrible, so appallingly unmusical, so dogmatically insensitive to the magic of the art, that they qualify as crowned heads of anti-music."

Interestingly, though, Buckley was almost smart enough to know what he was full of. In a rare self-effacing moment, he admitted that "Some of my instincts are reprehensible."

Well, at least he got one thing right.
