It could be a prelude to invasion. The spammer could try identifying valid addresses by recording which ones don't bounce back with error messages.
Better yet, the spammer could record which people are foolish enough to reply, asking "Why did you send me this?" That second group of people -- who read and reply to unsolicited e-mail -- is pure gold to a spammer.
